Police hope forensic examination will lead to offender

Porirua Police hope forensic examination will lead to offender's identity in Tawa aggravated robbery

Porirua Police investigating the aggravated robbery of the Tawa Central Dairy on Sunday night have recovered clothing they believe was worn by the offender.

Detective James Withington of the Porirua CIB says at about 8 o'clock on Sunday night, a male entered the dairy and attempted to purchase a soft drink. When he was advised he had insufficient funds he produced a large carving knife and went behind the counter towards the store owner.

"The offender then left the dairy, running north and was seen running into the New World building site. A witness has since contacted Police to say he saw a male fitting the description of the offender discarding clothing as he ran towards the Tawa Railway Station."

Detective Withington says Police have since recovered two items of clothing which will be forensically examined.

"We are now keen to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of Duncan Street and Taylor Terrace around 8pm on Sunday night, who may have seen this offender of European descent, wearing a black loose-fitting singlet and black jeans with shoulder-length hair."

Police would also like to identify and speak to three people who boarded a train from Tawa Railway Station at about the same time, who may have useful information for Police.

"We appreciate the information we've received so far from members of the Tawa community but would like to hear from anyone else who may be able to assist. Those with information should phone the Porirua Police on (04) 238 1400 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
