Taruheru River wall
repairs close walkway
Part of the wall along the city side of the Taruheru River is slipping. Work will start on Thursday 16 February to repair it. To ensure public safety barriers will be put up and the riverbank walkway between Lowe Street and Peel Street will be closed while the work is carried out.
People using the walkway will be able use the Reads Quay footpath along this section. The work is expected to take six weeks. The actual completion date will depend on the weather and favourable tides. Most of the work can only be done at low tide. The underpass below Peel Street will be reopened as soon as possible – probably after two weeks.
The revetment walls along the Taruheru were installed in the mid 1970’s to support the riverbank and keep the river contained. The walls prevent erosion and safeguard riverside parks for public use.
While the work is being done, ways to enhance public safety and improve mobility access around this section of the walkway, will be looked at.
Gisborne District Council thanks all walkway users for their patience during this time.
