Rainfall has eased over most of Otago, with only light intensities occurring this afternoon. The Kakanui River peaked earlier today at 155 cubic metres a second, while the Leith peaked at 36 cumecs.
Further south, the Pomahaka River at Leithen Glen recorded its highest flow since February 1994 at 521 cumecs..The lower Pomahaka River is expected to peak during the night at around 2am tomorrow morning as the flow peak travels down the catchment.
The Shag River catchment has also received 50mm of rain in the last 24 hours with the river expected to exceed its flood warning level of 31 cubic metres later this evening.
Rain gauges in the Manuherikia catchment show up to 40mm has fallen in the last 24 hours and the river is at 40 cumecs and rising.
Deep Stream (a tributary of the lower Taieri River) is flowing at 110 cumecs and rising This is expected to increase flows in the lower Taieri at Outram to near its first flood alarm level later tonight.
Metservice still has an active rain warning in force throughout Otago until 11pm tonight. If rainfall intensities increase, river levels in catchments that are currently falling could rapidly rise again. Metservice warns people in these areas to watch for rising or already swollen rivers and streams. Surface flooding and slips are possible and driving conditions may be hazardous in heavy rain.
