Federated Farmers reopens Feedline for Southland and South Otago farmers tomorrow

Following a particularly dry summer in southern New Zealand, Federated Farmers will reopen its Feed Information Line following indication some farmers could run short of feed. Usually reliable winter feed crops were late establishing effectively losing two growing months. The line will be live from Monday 27 February.

“A lack of rain over December and early January means winter feed crops in Southland and southern and coastal Otago have lost up to two growing months,” Federated Farmers adverse events spokesman David Rose said.

“Feed crops are necessary in southern New Zealand because grass growth stops for several months over the winter.

“Federated Farmers and DairyNZ are working together to ensure farmers in these areas can source adequate feed for their stock.

“Federated Farmers feed information service is free but as essentially a "dating agency" between suppliers and buyers. As such we take no responsibility for any other issues that may arise.

“Both farmers needing feed and those with surplus feed can call 0800 376 844 from Monday 27 February to add listings to our "Feed Available" or "Feed Needed" lists. It will be open to all farmers, not just dairy.

“Once we have collated the feed types available, this information will be posted on the Federation’s website, www.fedfarm.org.nz.
“Naturally, we’re all hoping for a benign autumn which will allow winter feed crops to achieve better yields. However, many farmers are sourcing supplies to make sure they don’t run short in winter and we are looking to help,” Mr Rose concluded.
