Looking For A Christchurch Family to Support

Media Release 4 March 2012

Kiwi expats in Australia Looking For A Christchurch Family to Support – nominations open tomorrow (Monday)

3 million page views on Christchurch Rebuild Website

A group of Kiwis from Mackay in Australia has raised more than $NZ7000 to help a Christchurch family severely disadvantaged by the earthquakes.

Project Mackay came about after the expats raised a significant amount of money during recent Waitangi day celebrations. They are supported by the Rebuild Christchurch Foundation.

The expat Kiwi group’s spokesperson, Calley Morrison, says they want to help the rebuild of Christchurch by supporting a family in the city who has no other means to replace items they have lost over the last 18 months following the quakes.

“We want to help a family that has been through hell and back with these devastating earthquakes. From where we are, it looks as though so many could really do with a helping hand. We will help replace furniture, clothes, toys or pay to repair something small they desperately need doing," Morrison says.

“With the help of the Rebuild Christchurch Foundation and their website rebuildchristchurch.co.nz, people can nominate their own family, or others can nominate families they feel fit the criteria,” says Calley.

Nominations can be made at www.rebuildchristchurch.co.nz/project-mackay from tomorrow (Monday 5 March) until Monday March 19th at 5pm.

Rebuild Christchurch’s Deon Swiggs says he and his team have been immensely touched by the continuing outpouring of support from around the country and further afield.

“We have several significant projects in the planning stages which will see individuals, families, businesses and the Rebuild Christchurch Foundation receive financial support in the near and long-term future,” he says. “With more than 3 million page views, rebuildchristchurch.co.nz is receiving an increasing number of visitors and fast becoming recognised as the eyes and ears of Christchurch.”

The final decision on which family will be selected to receive the donation of goods, is to be made by the Kiwi’s in Mackay, and the recipient will be presented with the monetary donation and goods on March 30th by the Rebuild Christchurch Foundation and a representative from the expat Kiwis in Mackay.

Dates: Final date for registration or nomination is Monday March 19th at 5pm.
Decision on recipient made by Mackay expat group by March 28th
