Trust to establish new city garden on Auckland waterfront

Trust to establish new city garden on the Auckland waterfront

The Garden to Table Trust is working with Waterfront Auckland on an exciting project to be established in Wynyard Quarter later this year.

On an area of land set aside for its activities, the trust will create an extensive edible garden and kitchen classroom facility. The area will be used to further the trust’s work by enabling children from a number of local primary schools to regularly participate in the Garden to Table programme.

The landmark inner-city garden will also be a wonderful resource for inner city residents and the building will house a unique events venue as well as a much-needed headquarters for the trust.

Trust founder and chair Catherine Bell says the project provides new visibility for its work:

“Simply by educating kids about where food comes from we have the potential to change attitudes and habits of whole future generations. Both children and adults learn experiences that will influence and inform them and it will be brilliant to have this new space in such a high traffic area as the Wynyard Quarter.”

Over the next 25 years, Waterfront Auckland, a council controlled organisation of Auckland Council, is redeveloping 18.5 hectares of formerly industrial land in Wynyard Quarter into a mixed-use urban environment. It is designed to accommodate the fishing and marine industries alongside residential, entertainment and community facilities and a tech innovation hub.

Connie Clarkson, Placemaker for Waterfront Auckland, says the garden has the potential to be a great asset for the area.

“The Garden to Table programme is a fantastic concept and we look forward to welcoming the trust to the area. The trust’s philosophy aligns well with the sustainable living approach we wish to cultivate in the precinct as Wynyard Quarter develops into an urban community.”
