BREAKING NEW GROUND
Concept plans unveiled for new inner city garden

The Garden to Table Trust and Waterfront Auckland has unveiled concept plans for the landmark garden project to be established in Wynyard Quarter later this year.

‘Garden to Table at Wynyard Quarter’ is to be an extensive edible garden and kitchen classroom facility.

The landscape design and initial concept, created by Susannah Kitching and Robert Cunningham at Opus International, breathes life into the project and shows more than 100 raised garden beds with children busy at work in the 1500sqm lot.

The area is being established to further the trust’s work by enabling children from a number of local primary schools – including Bayfield School, Ponsonby Primary and Freemans Bay School – to regularly participate in the Garden to Table programme.

It will also be a wonderful resource for Auckland residents and the building will provide a unique events venue as well as a much-needed headquarters for the trust.

The plans were unveiled today (Tuesday 31) at a special ceremony in association with Garden to Table, the council organisation Waterfront Auckland and Ngati Whatua O Orakei to officially mark the start of the construction.

Trust founder and chair Catherine Bell is thrilled to see the scheme taking shape.

“This amazing project has been in the planning for some time now and it’s extraordinary to finally see it in colour. We’re thrilled with the plans by Opus.

“The project is not without its hurdles though! We’re working very hard behind the scenes to raise the essential and quite substantial funds required to finance the project and are seeking partners and sponsors to assist with funding.

“We’re extremely grateful for those who have already come on board to support the project and we welcome interest from other companies looking to support a positive cause that helps our children grow and learn.”

Existing Garden to Table partners and sponsors, including McGregors, Opus International, Oakdale Organics, Living Earth, NZ Landscape Supplies, The Village Press, Fodda and Fisher & Paykel, have already committed to supporting the Wynyard Quarter facility.
