Spatial Plan for Dunedin Approved
Spatial Plan for Dunedin
Approved
Dunedin (Monday 17 September 2012) - At
its meeting today, the Dunedin City Council adopted
‘Dunedin Towards 2050 - A Spatial Plan for
Dunedin.
This type of development strategy is about
more than just how to best provide for growth. It sets a
strategic vision for a city’s development that is focused
on economic development, liveability, social wellbeing, and
improving environmental sustainability.
Mayor Dave
Cull says, “The submitters who spoke at the Hearings were
positive and supportive of our Spatial Plan and its intent.
They were generally excited that a vision for the city,
perhaps overdue, has been developed and expressed. With the
Plan now adopted, we, as a Council, have the building blocks
we need to ensure that Dunedin will develop in the direction
our residents want it to over the next 30 to 40
years.”
The Spatial Plan provides a clear set of
strategic directions that will inform the development of the
second generation District Plan. It will also be used to
improve long-term planning and co-ordination of DCC
activities by linking land-use planning in the city to how
future infrastructure and services may be provided.
In
the next few weeks, those who submitted on the Spatial Plan
will receive confirmation of its adoption and s summary of
the key changes that were made as a result of submissions.
City Development Manager Anna Johnson says “The
first major piece of work will be the development of
Dunedin’s second generation District Plan. This has
already begun and we are pleased that with the Spatial Plan
formally adopted by the Council, we can be clear that we are
headed in the right
direction.”
