Gisborne: Getting the Waste Message |

Getting the Waste Message
This year’s environmental performance, being delivered to over 4000 of the district’s pupils, is giving a strong message to students on thinking about ‘stuff’ before throwing it into a landfill.
‘The World is not a dump’ has been adapted for the stage by Shauna Ratapu, of Unhinged Productions, from the recently released book by Opotiki author and illustrator, Nikki Slade Robinson. Both the play and the book are in the style of Dr Seuss, telling the story of how Munkle Arvur finds a way to rescue the town - by recycling the waste!
‘This is another way of getting environmental messages across’ said Anne Lister, Council’s Waste Minimisation Coordinator. ‘It builds on the programmes Council has been running in schools and at the Rethink Waste Education Centre. This is ‘fun’ with a strong message. It is especially relevant to the rural schools with the changes that are happening at their rural transfer stations’.
