T-shirts show love affair with Whangarei

This year’s ‘Whangarei: Love it Here’ t-shirt design competition has received an overwhelming response, with around 200 designs submitted from across the District, highlighting why people love it here in Whangarei.

The top ten t-shirt designs are up for public voting from tomorrow, Saturday 22 September, with the three winning t-shirts due on sale before Christmas. A wide range of the entries are now on display at Te Manawa: The Hub, at the Town Basin.

A judging panel had the task of narrowing the field from 250 down to just 10 - a challenging job given the calibre of entries.

Whangarei District Council Economic Development Manager Pete Gleeson was delighted with the quality of work shown, making special mention of those local schools who entered the competition.

“We were incredibly impressed with the talent displayed by the entries. We had a great response from several schools, including Whangarei Girls High School and Whangarei Primary School, which was positive to see. In fact, three of our top 10 winners are school age children.

“After a gruelling selection process, the designs chosen were those that we felt best reflected the heart and soul of Whangarei. We’re excited to have a wide variety of styles in our top 10 this year, showing the unique and personal nature of our connection and love affair with the city of Whangarei.”

The 10 finalists are:
• Ash Rouse
• Chloe Alderton
• Crystal Rihia
• Grace Elliot
• Jim Griffiths
• Mahalia-Jo Moa
• Julia Carter-Bell
• Sara King
• Scott Simpson
• Tuhulu ‘Isileli-Fo’ou

The top 10 designs will be on display from Saturday 22 September in local retailers, online at the Whangarei: Love it Here Facebook page and in the Northern Advocate. Community votes will decide on the top three designs, which will then go to print and be available for purchase in local retailers prior to Christmas.

To have your say on your favourite design, vote in store at Tuatara, Inferno, Megasurf, Paper Plus, Dive! Tutukaka, Kiwi North, the Tarewa i-Site or Te Manawa; the Hub at the Town Basin.

You can also vote at the Whangarei: Love it here Facebook page, or by texting ‘NAD’ and the designer’s name to 021 241 4568. Voting closes on 7th October. Full details of the competition are available at www.whangareinz.com.

Mr Gleeson thanked sponsors the Northern Advocate, Big Fish Creative, Mai FM, The Edge, Hot Prints and 100% Barrell’s.

Scoop Business: Bathurst Gets Nod For DoC Access To Denniston Mine

Conservation Minister Nick Smith has approved access over conservation estate land for Bathurst Resources to develop an open cast coal mine on the Denniston Plateau, above Westport, to the dismay of environmental opponents.

The timing for Smith’s move avoids Bathurst having to resubmit applications for access agreements under the revised Crown Minerals Act, which comes into force tomorrow and would have required public consultation.

The announcement lands in the middle of delicate negotiations between the company, environmental groups and other interested parties that could pave the way to a broader agreement on the Escarpment proposal, whose resource consents are still subject to court appeals. More>>
