Top Snow Sees Early Season Pass Sale During October

A heavy spring snow fall of fresh powder has blanketed the Mt Ruapehu Ski Area overnight, just in time for the school holidays.

Snow is currently falling to 1100 metres, with an average of 15-20cm on the upper slopes and 30cm in the gullies. More snow is forecast till tomorrow.

Whakapapa Ski Area Manager, Steve McGill says the patrol teams have reported snow pockets of up to 40cm deep in places and describe the fresh snow as Mt Ruapehu Champagne Powder (low density, soft snow).

“The snow fall couldn’t have come at a better time. It is a great bonus for this time of year, topping up the trails as we head into the spring season. It’s also great timing for the school holidays,” says Mr McGill.

The snow follows the recent announcement that the 2012 winter season will be extended a further two weeks. Mt Ruapehu’s Turoa Ski Area will remain open until 4 November and Whakapapa Ski Area is set to close as scheduled on Labour Weekend (22 October).

Michelle Ellis, Corporate Services Manager says they are very excited that the snow fall has arrived for the launch of the 2013 Season Passes.

“It is the first time we have ever released the following year’s season passes during October. The special rate means unlimited skiing for the all of the 2013 winter. People don’t realise that you get your value worth with just 5 days.”
