Labour Weekend Opening of the Tongariro River Trail

Media Release 17 Oct 2012

Labour Weekend Opening of the Tongariro River Trail

The new Tongariro River Trail will open at 9.30am this Saturday at the Turangi i-SITE.

After an official blessing and ribbon cutting ceremony locals and visitors alike are invited to walk or ride the new Tongariro River Trail. This 20km loop track circuits Turangi Township along the eastern bank of the world famous trout fishing river to the Tongariro National Trout Centre and on to Red Hut Pool. The shared walking and biking trail is in a lush native bush setting with beautiful views of the river.

The opening will be hosted by the Advocates of the Trail, The Department of Conservation, Taupo District Council, Genesis Energy and local iwi.

This latest track complements almost 200km of mountain biking trails across the Great Lake Taupo region. Suitable for all ages, there is a wide choice of tracks from those hugging cliff tops overlooking the mighty Huka Falls, to gentle boardwalks aside Great Lake Taupō. The stunning lake, river and mountain vistas make staying on your bike just that much harder – luckily there are plenty of spots to stop and enjoy a picnic or simply take in the scenery.

“With so much variety in our hiking and biking tracks it’s no wonder that we are increasingly regarded as a world-class destination for anyone wanting to get out and experience the great outdoors” commented Donna Jarden, Marketing Manager at Destination Great Lake Taupo. “From a gentle ride as a family along the Tongariro River Trail to our world- famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, we have something for everyone”
