After its successful reception in 2011, the BMW NZ Open returns to Clearwater Golf Club, giving Christchurch its second round of premier golf from Thursday 22 – Sunday 25 November.

This flagship tournament for the men’s game in New Zealand is the biggest event on Christchurch’s sporting calendar, and fans of all stripes are invited to watch.

Mayor Bob Parker says the year’s national championship makes Christchurch New Zealand’s golfing capital.

“This city is taking on bigger and better challenges, and we’re looking forward to the international visitors and the buzz this event will generate, as well as the positive impact it will have on our city and its ratepayers.

“The Christchurch City Council remains committed to attracting top sporting events and athletes to the city, and it will be a privilege to host top New Zealand golfers such as Mark Brown, Michael Hendry and Vaughan McCall on our greens.”

The BMW NZ Open will be broadcast into Canada, Latin America, the United States, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia. There will be an estimated 166 hours of coverage, reaching nearly 117 million households.

Christchurch ratepayers and their guests are eligible for passes to attend the BMW NZ Open for half-price. Those who attend will be on course to win the use of a BMW 3 Series Sedan for the summer. For more information visit www.bmwnzopen.co.nz.

Those who sample some of the South Island’s leading wines, along with local food and produce, in the Village Square at Clearwater Golf Club go in the draw to win one of two double passes to the New World Wine & Food Festival. Wineries with a presence at the BMW NZ Open include Pyramid Valley, Floating Mountain, The Third Man, Shingle Peak and Mountford Estate.

Gordon Campbell: On The 2013 Budget

Among Thursday’s main talking points:

We are apparently on track for a margin-of-error $75 million surplus, now in sight for 2014/15. But this sickly creature is hobbling out of the lab on the basis of all kinds of facilitative conjuring: such as trimming by $200 million the amount of new spending next time around.

With this strictly nominal surplus in sight, the 1984-ish justification for eternal austerity will have a news talisman: namely, getting Crown debt down to 20% of GDP by 2020. More>>

Budget 2013 Comment: Plain Sailing, But It's No America's Cup Pattrick Smellie: Compared to the last four budgets, this year's reflects an economy moving out of recession and into calmer waters... Gordon Campbell:
On Stonewalling About The GCSB And MMP

This week has seen two examples of turkeys refusing to vote for an early Christmas – while busily denying the evident self interest involved. First, the GCSB is refusing to identify the 88 people it has illegally spied upon – as revealed in the Kitteridge report – and is donning the cloak of national security to justify its refusal to be transparent.
