New Summer Festival To Cook Up Local Fritter Magic

Whangarei’s Endless Summer Festival has not quite kicked off but already organisers are buzzing about a sizzling hot and sumptuous finale - the first ever Whangarei Fritter Festival – to be held during Easter next year.

The inaugural Whangarei Fritter Festival will see local restaurants battling it out to become the first winners of the Annual Fritter Trophy at a day of fun, music and relaxation at Toll Stadium on Saturday 30 March.

“We are excited to be bringing this brand-new, home-grown event to the District,” said manager of Venues and Events Whangarei, John Lynch.

“It’s our role to promote and market Whangarei as an events destination and help create a sense of place and provide economic benefit to the city, so it’s great to be part of establishing the annual Whangarei Fritter Festival, an event that will encourage people from outside of our District to visit Whangarei during Easter weekend and spend time in our beautiful city.

“We want this to become one of the highlights on the Northland Calendar, an event that will draw people back here year after year. It takes just one step to get something like this onto the calendar, and who knows – it could become ‘world famous in New Zealand’!” he said.

“We can promise a relaxed family day with great music and a feast of fine wines and gourmet fritters from Whangarei’s finest local restaurants and wineries along with top notch entertainment from The Black Seeds, Sola Rosa and Batucada Sound Machine plus loads more great talent.

“Children will also be catered for with entertainment including a giant water slide. We want this to become an event people of all ages talk about afterwards and look forward to every year,” Mr Lynch said.

THE TALENT

The Black Seeds originate from Wellington and are led by the vocals of Barnaby Weir and Daniel Weetman. At its core The Black Seeds’ music is a boundary-crossing sound fusion of big-beat funk, dub, soul, mixed with vintage roots-reggae.

Andrew Spraggon’s work as Sola Rosa has cemented him as one of the world’s most exciting and versatile producers. From a humble, self-released one man project, Sola Rosa has grown to a live collective of international repute. Successfully melding hip hop, reggae, jazz, latin, soul and funk, the group has never sat comfortably in just one box but with Spraggon’s guidance, that restlessness has been channeled into six succinct albums.

Batucada Sound Machine thrives on the festival atmosphere, with a reputation for outstanding live performances. The band’s percussion-heavy rhythm section, blazin’ horns, chunky guitars, and soulful vocals all fuse effortlessly to intertwine Brazilian, funk, hip-hop, afro-beat and Pacific-soul influences.
