Truck v Train - fatal crash

Emergency services are at the scene of a fatal crash involving a light truck and a freight train just off State Highway 2 north of Woodville.

Railway officials were alerted to the incident by the train driver just before 5 pm this afternoon. It appears the truck was been driven across a level crossing on a small side road leading to the main highway when it was hit and pushed off the tracks into a nearby paddock.

The sole male occupant of the truck was confirmed deceased at the scene shortly afterwards.

The incident has not impacted on traffic flow on the highway.

The ministry says the business has failed to recruit and retain quality staff – and says the kaimahi (caregivers) that have been employed are seriously unsuitable for the job, lacking basic knowledge. But Te Roopu Taurima o Manukau doesn’t get all the blame. The report says there’s a significant gap under disability laws to ensure there’s oversight by qualified clinical professionals. More>>
