Manawatu-Wanganui Tsunami watch

Message:

An official tsunami watch has been received for the Manawatu-Wanganui Region. The following is a summary of estimated wave arrival times and action that should be taken:

Coastal area First wave arrival Action
Tararua ~ 18:00 – 19:00 Clear all beach, river mouth and estuary areas in Herbertville, Akitio, Owahanga.
Wanganui-Rangitikei ~ 18:00 – 19:00 Clear all beach, river mouth and estuary areas. All boat ramps in Wanganui are closed.
Manawatu-Horowhenua ~ 18:00 – 19:00 Clear all beach, river mouth and estuary areas.
All areas n/a All activities such as swimming, surfing and diving should stop immediately.

The threat is still being assessed by the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management and will be updated regularly.

Forecast wave arrival times are estimated therefore allow plenty of time to get to a safe area.

The first tsunami wave to arrive would not necessarily be the largest wave. Unusual wave action, tides and currents can be expect for up to 24 hours after the first wave.
