Elderly driver dies in fatal crash in Christchurch
Christchurch police have confirmed that a man in his 80s has died in a two-car collision at Chaneys Corner this afternoon.
The man was the driver of a vehicle which collided with another car at the intersection of Main North Road and Marshland Road, at approximately 2.30pm today [Sunday 10 February].
The passenger in the car, an elderly female, was transferred to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.
The driver of the other car involved in the crash received only minor injuries.
Police say initial enquiries indicate that the car driven by the deceased had been travelling east on Main North Road when it collided with the vehicle travelling north on Marshland Road.
Enquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing.
The name of the deceased is expected to be released tomorrow, after next-of-kin have been notified.
Diversions at the scene of the crash were in place for much of the afternoon, but were lifted at 6.00pm today.
Police expressed appreciation to the motoring public for their patience while road blocks were in place on a busy stretch of road, and for the number of witnesses that have contacted police.
