Taste Nelson Aims to be the event that attracts visitors to the Region

Celebrating what's great about us

After a 10 year hiatus Taste Nelson is back with a fresh and unique approach to all other festivals on offer. The focus is on celebrating what is great about our region. Instead of bringing in outside entertainment. The best music from the top of the south region, sharing our award winning wines & beers, showing our best cuisine is the focus of the event.. .

Seifried Wines will celebrate their 40 years of winegrowing in the Nelson region. A family whose prowess in viticulture and winemaking was the kickstarter to Nelson becoming a top wine growing area.

Masterchef 2012 Winner Chelsea Winter. The self-described gangly, blonde, kitchen ninja will be
showing off her culinary talents and giving the public some pointers along the way, with demonstrations throughout the day using our beautiful local ingredients.

Emma McCashin, one of the festival organisers says “To attract visitors to the region, we much show them what we have to offer, that is unique to us and celebrate that we are proud of our people & products. We are determined to grow this event to be the one, people from outside of Nelson come to discover what we have” . But its also a great opportunity for locals to try local products that they may not even realise are made in Nelson.

Taste Nelson has arranged Grab a Seat specials into the region with Air New Zealand, so visitors can come and not only enjoy our stunning wines, beers & cuisine, but hear our successful local music artists like Aly Cook, awarded The New Zealand Female Country Artist of the Year 2012. Already Aly has been twice to Australia to perform this year, where she has had 2 top 20 Country singles on radio in the last 6 months. Aly’s music videos can be seen here on Sky63 Music Video channel & those who travel on Air New Zealand will see her album on the in-flight program. Aly will present the same program she presents regularly across the Tasman, songs from her album live with a top quality band.

Sarah Brown singer/songwriter based in the top of the south region has her music videos on juice television and also is an award winning musician. Nelson’s own Johnny Cash Tribute band who traveled to to the USA last year, were revered by members of the Cash Family will be there to perform, along with regional favorites The Saints and House of Kramit.

World Refugee Day:
Are We Doing Our Bit?

On World Refugee Day, Thursday June 20th, Doing Our Bit will officially launch a campaign to double New Zealand’s UNHCR Refugee Resettlement Quota...

New Zealand’s low refugee intake is not a new issue. In February a NZ Herald editorial commented that our intake was ‘paltry’, remarking that ‘surely we could do more’. In April, Amnesty International described the quota as ‘tiny'.

“Despite being a small country in the middle of the South Pacific, New Zealand prides itself on being hospitable. We are friendly to overseas visitors and we see ourselves as punching above our weight in international affairs,” said Murdoch Stephens, coordinator of Doing Our Bit.

“However, in terms of accepting refugees New Zealand is clearly not doing our share.” More>>
