Wairarapa Police are investigating after vehicle hit by train
Wairarapa Police are investigating a traffic crash after a vehicle was hit by a commuter train near Carterton this morning.
The south-bound commuter train was passing the crossing at Wiltons Road, at 8.15am which is controlled by a stop sign.
A female passenger of the vehicle died at the scene and the male driver has been taken to Wairarapa Hospital in a serious condition.
Road blocks are in place from both ends of Wilton Road.
The Serious Crash Unit will be undertaking a scene examination today.
There is extensive damage to the vehicle from the impact of the train.
Fortunately, there were only a few passengers on the train at the time and a bus has been arranged to take them to Wellington.
The driver of the train is extremely shaken but not injured and is being supported by Police and Victim Support, along with Kiwi-Rail staff.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the vicinity of the crash to contact Wairarapa Police on 06 370 0300.
