Celebrate life in Brighton and the fantastic spirit of the community with these focused, low- and no-cost activities. Now in its third year, I Love New Brighton is a community favourite with a fantastic vibe, growing each year and displaying what makes Brighton unique. The day will also include a great array of art and craft market stalls and a selection of food to purchase.

Waltham Skate Jam and Family Day
Noon–3pm
Waltham School, Hastings Street

The Cheapskates Skate Skool runs a series of free community skate jams around Canterbury. These events are aimed at engaging youth into skating with free gear hire and coaching from experienced skaters. All events include a best trick competition where participants can show off their best moves for a chance to win prizes.

Waltham Skate Jam is not a typical skate jam! There will be loads of other fun activities to add to the mix such as a bouncy castle, fun family games and plenty of prizes to give away.

Free

Canadian folk singer Valdy and local finger-style guitar legend Graham Wardrop link opposite ends of the Pacific via fine songwriting, virtuoso guitar playing and tight harmony singing. Each is a soloist performing at the top of his field – together, the combination is both musically rewarding and highly entertaining. In association with Festival of Flowers and Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

Gordon Campbell: On Failures Of Care For Those With Mental Disabilities

Hard to imagine a more disturbing insight into the treatment of the vulnerable than the Health Ministry report on Te Roopu Taurima o Manukau. The Ministry has found that the country’s only kaupapa Maori intellectual disability residential care provider has been “seriously dysfunctional.”

The ministry says the business has failed to recruit and retain quality staff – and says the kaimahi (caregivers) that have been employed are seriously unsuitable for the job, lacking basic knowledge. But Te Roopu Taurima o Manukau doesn’t get all the blame. The report says there’s a significant gap under disability laws to ensure there’s oversight by qualified clinical professionals. More>>
