Showcase for Auckland’s golden girl

Auckland Council and Sport NZ are teaming up to fund an event that will showcase and celebrate Auckland’s double Olympic champion Valerie Adams.

Shot In The City is a chance for Aucklanders to see Valerie Adams in action in a world-class shot put competition on Saturday 2 March, at The Cloud, Queens Wharf.

Auckland Council is putting $30,000 into the one-off event, while Sport NZ, NZ Post and Athletics NZ are also supporting the event. The announcement was made today at High Performance Sport NZ’s National Training Centre in Auckland.

Mayor Len Brown says he is thrilled Aucklanders will have a chance to see their world-class champion on our world-class waterfront.

“Valerie is a great ambassador for her sport, for Auckland and New Zealand,” says Len Brown. “This event not only allows us to see an international athlete in her prime, but will also give people a chance to give shot put a go.”

Valerie Adams says New Zealand has never seen an event like this. “It is based on Zurich’s Big Shot event, but with a truly Pacific and Kiwi feel, set against the backdrop of the Pacific Showcase Markets in The Cloud. I’m pleased to be bringing our sports communities and Pacific communities together in a day that will be fun for everyone.”
