Summer continues on Queens Wharf

Friday 1 March

Summer continues on Queens Wharf

It may be March but as Auckland’s long, hot summer continues Queens Wharf goes from strength to strength as an outdoor hub for arts, food and music in the CBD.

Now in its fourth and final month for this summer, the March programme of ‘Play on Queens’ is packed full of activities that surprise, delight and sometimes challenge visitors to Queens Wharf.

The highlight of activity in March is the featured exhibition Conversations in Mind. 14 artists including Flox, Nigel Roberts, and Tiffany Singh have come together to create an exhibition that explores the senses and invites thoughtful contemplation about the nature of the mind. Featuring installation art, photography, moving images and murals, curator Cleo Barnett says:

Conversations in Mind creates something beautiful to be enjoyed, to add colour and nature to Queens Wharf and provides a space for the Auckland community to contemplate, exchange and discover together.”

Conversations in Mind is open 9am and 4pm each day until 23 March and open late as part of the Auckland Festival White night on 16 March where Blackbird Ensemble will also perform on Queens Wharf.

The hugely popular street portraits return on Friday 22 March. For $5, visitors to the wharf can get their portrait drawn by some of Auckland’s quirkiest and talented emerging artists. Portraits vary from classic watercolours to cartoon monster representations. March also sees a live performance by The Samson Nacey Haines Trio and the third instalment of the popular Queens Wharf Drawing Club.

Queens Wharf Manager Connie Clarkson, from Council organisation, Waterfront Auckland says she is extremely excited about the coming month’s activity:

“We are thrilled that Queens Wharf can be a space in downtown Auckland that emerging artists can exhibit and interact with a varied audience from office workers to cruise ship passengers. Once visitors to the wharf come through the red gates there is something to surprise and delight.”

To complement Play on Queens, Kai on Queens continues the lunchtime street food offering. Kai on Queens is a chance for visitors to the wharf to get out of the office and grab a bite to eat from a range of local mobile food vendors each Friday from 11.30am – 2.30pm through until the end of March. To complement the food offering DJs add to the relaxed atmosphere on the wharf.
