School Of Music And Theatre Royal Welcome Council Ownership
Media release: 5 March 2013
The Nelson School of Music and the Nelson Historic Theatre Trust (Theatre Royal) have confirmed their commitment and welcomed plans for a joint future with the Nelson City Council.
The Council proposed in last year’s Long Term Plan to take over the ownership of both the Nelson School of Music and the Theatre Royal buildings, which have long histories with our city.
The Trust Boards of NSOM and NHTT have now agreed to the transfer of ownership of the venues to Council. Council will be responsible for maintaining the buildings and has also set aside funding towards the upgrade for earthquake strengthening and refurbishment of NSOM.
Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio says the venues are fantastic pieces of Nelson heritage and an important part of our community for so many people.
“While Council will be responsible for the continued maintenance of these iconic buildings, the Boards can concentrate on their core business of running excellent community facilities” Mayor Miccio says.
NSOM Trust Board Chair Neil Deans says the school is resolved to making the future partnership deliver the best possible outcomes for both the School of Music and the citizens of Nelson. “We look forward to working closely with the community and the Council to make this work for future performing arts in Nelson”.
The chair of the NHTT Trust Kerry Marshall is personally delighted that the 21st century, state of the art heritage building will continue to be a cultural asset for the city and our community. “The Nelson Historic Theatre Trust was formed to restore the Theatre Royal and this move has been achieved through careful negotiations with Nelson City Council. I am satisfied that this outcome will secure the best future for the people of the Nelson region.”
The Trust Boards have also agreed to Council’s proposed joint governance structure for both the NSOM and the Theatre Royal, subject to agreement on final terms and conditions.
