Council Warns Against Rummaging Through Kerbside Recycling

Hastings District Council is warning people against rummaging through kerbside recycling. A number of incidents have come to light recently, where residents have noticed that their recycling has been tampered with after they have put it on the kerbside for collection.

Waste Minimisation Officer Dominic Salmon says “Council bylaws specifically prohibit recycling being taken once it has been left on the kerbside for our contractors to pick up. One of the major problems create by rummaging through recycling, is the mess that is left for our contractors to tidy up.”

Mr Salmon says “The bags containing recyclable material are often ripped open and material which was packed tidily into boxes is just left on the ground. This makes the roadside look very untidy until the recycling is collected.”

“There is also a safety issue, as some of those who have been seen rifling through recycling during the hours of darkness are wearing dark clothing and have been riding bikes without lights. Our contractors are easily identifiable as they wear high visibility clothing and the trucks are equipped with flashing lights Mr Salmon says.”

“Council is working with scrap metal dealers and Police to ensure that this practice doesn’t escalate around the district. We are happy that residents collect any material that has been illegally dropped and have it recycled but just rummaging through somebody’s recycling is illegal under the current bylaws.”
