No evidence of clan lab at Burwood property

Christchurch Police have confirmed that no evidence of a clan lab was found at a Burwood property which was searched this afternoon.

Police have been undertaking tactical training at an abandoned house in Kingsford Street, in the Horseshoe Lake area.

A training group of nine frontline officers entered the dwelling at around midday, and found a small quantity of materials that may have been linked to the manufacture of methamphetamine.

No other persons were located at the property.

The police clan lab team and a decontamination unit were called to the site as a precaution, while the materials were assessed.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Hill says the items included some glass beakers but no chemicals were located, and there was no evidence of any clan lab operation.

"We take any reports of possible clan labs very seriously - and it was important for us to assess this property," he says.

"Police are continuing to patrol and monitor properties in the residential red zone as we are concerned these may be targeted by criminal elements.

"We encourage any residents or passers-by to report any suspicious activity that they see to Police - we will follow up promptly."

Police and other agencies, in coordination with CERA, have regularly been training in vacant properties in the residential red zones over the past 18 months.

Hard to imagine a more disturbing insight into the treatment of the vulnerable than the Health Ministry report on Te Roopu Taurima o Manukau. The Ministry has found that the country’s only kaupapa Maori intellectual disability residential care provider has been “seriously dysfunctional.”

The ministry says the business has failed to recruit and retain quality staff – and says the kaimahi (caregivers) that have been employed are seriously unsuitable for the job, lacking basic knowledge.
