Expect delays on Waterloo Quay this Sunday
Motorists should expect delays along the waterfront this Sunday 17 March or consider taking other routes.
Weather permitting, the northbound lanes on Waterloo Quay between Whitmore and Bunny streets will be closed from 6am–6pm while contractors use a large crane and other equipment to remove the Hobbit sculptures from the fifth floor of the New Zealand Post building on the corner of Waterloo Quay and Whitmore Street.
North and southbound traffic will still be able to use the quay. There will be a single lane operating in each direction on the waterfront side of Waterloo Quay between Whitmore and Bunny streets. A section of Whitmore Street between Featherston Street and Waterloo Quay will also be closed in one direction (heading towards the quay).
Another closure is likely over the next few weeks as it will take longer than a day to remove the art work.
The plywood and cement silhouettes of Bilbo Baggins and dwarves were designed by Sir Richard Taylor and the Weta Workshop team and put up in October as part of The Hobbit premiere celebrations.
