The couple were sleeping in their van when they were awoken by two men who attacked them with a baseball bat.
The tourists fought to defend themselves and during the struggle the husband, aged 67, was able to wrest the softball bat from the offenders grasp and strike them with it.
Police are seeking the assistance of the public in identifying the two males involved, one of whom should have a decent bruise or cut on his head.
The majority tourists have an enjoyable and safe time in Northland and Police are urging tourists with campervans or tents to stay in camping grounds to avoid being the target of thieves.
