ZUMWOHL Adds European Flavour to Brewday

ZUMWOHL Adds European Flavour to Brewday

A German style Schnaps distilled and bottled in Wellington will add a unique flavour to next month’s inaugural Greater Wellington BrewDay in Martinborough.

ZUMWOHL, meaning a “toast to good health and wealth” is the first New Zealand made German-style Schnaps and will be available for visitors to try in a variety of ways at BrewDay to be held on Saturday, April 6th 2013.

Lisandro Walfisch, ZUMWOHL’S Central Region Relationship Manager says he is looking forward to showcasing Kirsch Schnaps (66% alcohol) which is made from plump New Zealand cherries and ZUMWOHL’s three flavours of traditional Schnaps (40% alcohol) including Plum, Feijoa and Natural.

“ZUMWOHL is a high percentage spirit similar to Vodka or Grappa and is incredibly smooth,” he says. “It can be enjoyed neat, in a shot glass over ice or used as a base for cocktails. But at BrewDay we’ve devised some different combinations for the day and are excited to see what visitors to the festival enjoy the most.”

A sneak peek is the Iconic Summer cocktail based with ZUMWOHL Feijoa, a touch of lime and top up with L&P.

In just 24 months ZUMWOHL has become the worlds most awarded German- style Schnaps with 11 medals and a Trophy to its credit from the world’s largest spirit competitions including: the International Wine & Spirits Competition in London and Hong Kong; the World Spirits Competition in San Francisco; and the China Spirits Awards.

While it has won medals for all its four flavours, the icing on the strudel however, was taking top honours and the Trophy plus Gold for the Eau de vie division for our Natural schnaps, and a Silver for our Kirsch 66% ABV, which has been specifically developed to cater for Chinese tastes.

ZUMWOHL will join 14 breweries and distillers from the greater Wellington region at BrewDay, on a festive site located a short distance from Martinborough’s landmark town square.

They will be joined by brewers and distillers including Black Dog, Parrot Dog, Fork and Brewer, Yeastie Boys, Funk Estate, Kereru Brewing and Garage Project(Wellington); Tuatara, Longbeach (Kapiti), Martinborough Brewery, 50 Knots, Regent 58 and Peak Brewery (Wairarapa). In addition Wairarapa based Crooked Cider, Wild Fern liqueurs and Hardie Boys low alcohol ginger beer and lemonade plus Six Barrel Sodas will also be at Brew Day.

Food will be provided by Wakelin House, Fork and Brewer, Peppers Parehua, Big Bad Wolf, Long Beach, Le Canard and Café Medici. There will also be Kingsmeade cheese matched with beer belly jellies.

Event organiser Karen Aitken says all participants are excited about showcasing their wares.

“A lot of beers and spirits, not previously released before, will enjoy their first outing at BrewDay and that’s really exciting,” she says.

Karen says the idea for the BrewDay follows the Greater Wellington region’s growing reputation as the craft beer capital of New Zealand.

“Wellington and the surrounding areas of Wairarapa and Kapiti are fast becoming known for their craft beer,” she says. “Locals seem keen to embrace the flavours and styles of craft beer and BrewDay is an extension of that allowing people to experience this on one site and in a beautiful, relaxing setting.”

“People love to come to the Wairarapa for the great weather in the autumn and to ensure they get there safely, we’ve teamed up with Tranzit Tours to meet the train from Wellington and to offer a bus service from select Wairarapa locations,” says Karen.
