Police Appeal For Information About Hukerenui Fatal Crash

Police Appeal For Information About Hukerenui Fatal Crash

Northland Police would like to speak to the occupants of two vehicles that were in the area at the time of yesterday's fatal crash at Hukerenui, north of Whangarei.

Northland Police Acting Road Policing Manager Senior Sergeant John Fagan says Police are interested in speaking to the occupants of a large green American style motor vehicle and another vehicle towing a large boat heading southbound on State Highway One around the time of the crash.

About 2pm yesterday (Sunday May 12) a four wheel drive vehicle towing another car was heading south when it appeared to have lost control. Another car heading north took evasive action to miss the 4WD vehicle, lost control and was hit by a third vehicle.
Two passengers in the car that was hit by the third vehicle died at the scene.

Mr Fagan says as well as wanting to talk to the occupants of two vehicles, Police also want any other witnesses that may have seen the crash or a vehicle being towed by another vehicle on State Highway One between Kawkawa and Hukerenui to come forward.

He says Police are saddened by the event on Sunday and extend their deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

Mr Fagan says the fatal crash is a reminder to motorists to take more responsibility and care when travelling on our roads, especially when towing.

"The maximum speed you can tow another vehicle without a rigid towing system, e.g. with a rope or a strop is 50 km/hr."

"Motorists are still taking risks with their lives, the lives of their passengers and other motorists. Until the motoring public see road safety as their responsibility as well then we will continue to have tragic crashes where poor decision making has resulted in unnecessary death or serious injury."

The names of the deceased have not been released yet, as Police are still contacting the next of kin.

Anyone who has information on yesterday's fatal crash can contact the Whangrei Police on 09 430 4500.
