Public encouraged to join the Carnival crew

MEDIA RELEASE
7th June, 2013

Lantern workshops booked out. Public encouraged to join the Carnival crew instead!

Event date: Saturday 22 June, 5.30pm, The Octagon, Dunedin
Weather contingency: Sunday 23 June

2013 Lantern Making Workshops Booked Out

This year’s lantern-making workshops have proven to be more popular than ever. All six workshops are booked out and there is a growing list of bookings for next year. Carnival spokesperson Paul Smith said there are already 100 people booked for next year’s lantern making workshops.

“We are really happy with the public response to the workshops and wish we could fit more people in. Already we have improved our procedures so we are taking more people but there is a limit to how many we can cope with and if we get too many people in the Procession then they won’t all fit around the Octagon.”

This year’s workshops will result in over 450 lanterns being made in the shape of fish, globes and pyramids. These will be complemented by giant lanterns made by local artists Katrina Thompson, Filipa Crofskey and Juliet Novena Sorrel.

Public invited to join the Carnival crew
The best way for people to get involved in the Carnival is to join the crew. We need over 80 volunteers to undertake a range of roles on the night of the Carnival. This could involve being a procession guide, distributing programmes or carrying a giant lantern.

“We couldn't do this event without the support of many volunteers,” said Smith. “Joining the Carnival crew is not only fun, but a great way to be part of a truly unique event. No experience is required, just enthusiasm!”
