Life flight transports man after cliff fall

Life flight transports man after cliff fall

At 7:15 this morning the Life Flight Trust was sent to airlift a man in his 20’s who had fallen down a steep cliff  the previous night. Life Flight responded in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The man was located about 3 kilometres north of Makara Beach.

He had been staying in a hut overnight  with some friends . The Hut was situated around 40 meters from a steep cliff face.

The Helicopter was involved in searching for the man between 1 and 2am this morning  but had to turn back due to increasing bad weather in the area.
Team members from the Wellington Free Ambulance Rescue Squad, the New Zealand Fire Service and The Police located the man about 100 meters down the cliff in some Flax bushes.

A tricky high angle rope rescue was undertaken by the teams on scene and the man was brought back to the top of the cliff and treatment began from Wellington Free Ambulance Paramedics located at the Hut.

Due to the early morning rain getting the patient to hospital by road was too dangerous even with 4wd vehicles due to the poor condition of the roads and  tracks  so the Helicopter was tasked to airlift him. The weather had improved considerably and the Helicopter managed to land directly beside the Hut where the man was quickly loaded and the transported to Wellington Hospitals emergency department to be treated for serious injuries.
