Strong support at The Roxy for charity

An enduring partnership between iconic Wellington cinema The Roxy and Ronald McDonald House Wellington has been cemented following last Friday’s The Roxy Great Gatsby Charity Ball.

The Charity Ball, held on Friday 14 June, was held in support of the Wellington-based charity, which provides accommodation for families of children in hospital.

More than 250 revellers attended the 1920s-inspired ball, donning tuxedos and feather boas for a lavish night of festivities.

A portion of ticket sales were donated to Ronald McDonald House, and collections were taken during the night. Jewellers Tory & Ko donated $15 per bracelet sold on the night to the charity, and a cake provided by The Stiletto Studio is currently being auctioned on Trade Me. Actor James Nesbitt also announced at the Ball that he and fellow cast mates would visit Ronald McDonald House prior to finishing filming pick-ups on The Hobbit, offering support to the families and cooking a meal.

“The Roxy Great Gatsby Charity Ball was a fantastic event and showed the strong support in our community for Ronald McDonald House. We are still tallying up the donations. Early figures showed more than $2000 had been raised but we expect the total amount donated will be in excess of this,” says Cesar Breton, General Manager of The Roxy.

“We have had a long standing relationship with Ronald McDonald House. It is such an amazing organisation and we are glad to be in a position to support them by way of in-kind donations, and financial support.”

The Roxy Charity Ball will become an annual fixture on its events calendar and plans are already underway for next year’s event.

“The Roxy Great Gatsby Charity Ball was incredible. The stars aligned, and everything came together perfectly. We’re looking forward to holding a similar event every year. In the meantime we have a busy few months ahead of us with a special Q&A with actor Martin Freeman on Sunday 30 June; Wellington on a Plate in August, including our inaugural ‘Feast Your Eyes’ Roxy Wellington Foodie Film Festival; an exclusive competition to join Oscar winners Sir Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger at the World of Wearable Art Opening Night in September; a Thunderbirds exhibition; and of course The Hobbit 2 starting in December,” says Cesar.
