NZ Post Stopping Mail Service

NZ Post Stopping Mail Service

Quake Outcasts, Christchurch-

New Zealand Post will permanently stop mail delivery to the residents in the government-designated Residential Red Zone (RRZ) in Christchurch after 31-July. In its letter to residents the state-owned company cites safety concerns for its employees arising from unsafe roads and footpaths.

31-July is the date for those residents who have accepted the government offer to move out.

The government has repeated claimed its red zone buy out offer is voluntary. However, many legal experts and academics argue that the offer is anything but voluntary.

There remains hundreds of families that still live in the RRZ, many of them have no choice but to stay because of unfair government offers.

This latest move by New Zealand Post proves that red zoning is a land-clearance policy implemented by goverment to coerce residents out of these areas.

If the buy out offer was truly 'voluntary', there should be no discontinuation of services, including the postal service.

New Zealand Post should raise its safety concerns to the relevant authorities that are responsible for maintaining safe roads and footpaths instead of penalising residents who have to use the same deteriorating roads and footpaths everyday.

Quake Outcasts has a Judicial Review case pending hearing at the Christchurch High Court on 22-July calling for the review of government's unlawful red zoning policy.
