Paul Bruce to stand again for Greater Wellington Regional Council

Cr Paul Bruce today launched his campaign for re-election to Greater Wellington Regional Council. He said he had learnt a lot during his two terms as Councillor, and was able to effectively represent his constituency as he become more adept at getting items on the Agenda.

“This year, I have also been successful in stopping the release of ozone destroying fumigant Methyl Bromide at CentrePort. Last year I put in place a moratorium on Fracking, helped get free cycle carriage on trains and support for domestic rainwater collection tanks,” Cr Paul Bruce explained.

“Right now, I am really excited as a remit that I initiated, is one of three remits to be considered at Local Government New Zealand AGM and Conference tomorrow (21st July). My remit requests central Government to move on ewaste product stewardship, with the cost of recycling becoming included in the price of new products”.

“I have received strong support for this remit”, he added “as Local Councils no longer want to pick up the Tab.”

Cr Bruce, said that he wanted to work with the Thrive Wellington Green campaign for improved public transport, walking and cycling for Wellington, job growth through socially responsible business, and Valuing nature for all its benefits.

He believes that Wellington can have a congestion free transport network for a third of the cost of building the RoNs roads. He also asked that the value of the proposed seaward cycle path between Hutt City and Wellington City be considered for the benefits than it can provide to the region's economy. A cycle/walkway would not only give cyclists a safe, scenic and healthy commuting route, but would also provide protection for the rail and road corridor from the storm surges that have cost the region's businesses in recent weeks.

Cr Bruce said that he detected a groundswell that could lead to his re-election at the Greater Wellington Regional Council together with ex MP Sue Kedgely, and with sitting Councillor Iona Pannett, and new Green candidates Sarah Free and David Lee also being elected to the Wellington City Council. He says this will create the opportunity to transform Wellington into a thriving even more loved city.
