International Musical Theatre School in Christchurch
International Musical Theatre School to Start in Christchurch
For two weeks in January next year, international musical theatre artists and students from around New Zealand will descend on Christchurch as they take part in the first ever "Christchurch International Musical Theatre Summer School" which takes place January 20th - February 2nd, 2014.
The school has been founded and will be directed by Christchurch musical director, Luke Di Somma. Di Somma, a Fulbright Scholar who studied at New York University's presitigious Tisch School of the Arts sees a real need for such a school in Christchurch.
"Over the last few years I've worked with hundreds of talented young actors, singers and dancers in Christchurch and have been inspired to start this summer school for them, and for Christchurch."
'There is so much talent in this region, and the Christchurch International Musical Theatre Summer School fills a major gap in the performing arts education calendar in Christchurch."
The school consists of two streams - a secondary school stream and an emerging professionals stream for "bigger kids" from 18 - 30. Di Somma has thus far secured top professional tutors from London, Sydney and Auckland.
One such tutor is British musical director Mark W Dorrell. Dorrell spent 20 years working in London on the West End and at the National Theatre, and has worked with such luminaries as Hugh Jackman, Dame Judi Dench, and Sir Ian McKellen.
"I'm delighted to be coming to Christchurch to participate in the inaugural CIMTSS. This is a hugely exciting initiative and I look forward to working with the many talented students of Christchurch. Roll on January!" says Dorrell.
Other tutors announced include Australian actor Tyran Parke, leading New Zealand actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand, and Auckland musical director Jason Te Mete.
Di Somma hopes to announce a second wave of tutors in the coming weeks.
