Could Friday 13 bring luck to Lotto players?

Media Release  13 September 2013

Could Friday 13 bring luck to Lotto players?

It may be Friday the 13th, but number frequency data released today by Lotto New Zealand reveals that ‘unlucky’ number 13 is actually one of the most-drawn Lotto numbers.

Tomorrow’s Lotto draw sees the Powerball jackpot standing at $25 million, which could make it a very lucky weekend for somebody. If won by one person, this will be the third highest Powerball prize claimed in Lotto history.

Many Lotto players take their chances with a random lucky dip ticket, but some prefer to keep an eye on the official frequency statistics to decide how to select their numbers.

The most drawn Lotto number is the number 1, having been drawn 271 times out of 1370 draws. Number 7 – often considered lucky – has the second-highest frequency when the balls drop through the Lotto machine, with 268 draw appearances.

And in third place? Yes, you guessed it – it’s number 13. Despite its unpopular reputation, it has been drawn 264 times, featuring in 19% of Lotto’s draws since 1987.

The number 13 gets a bad rap – especially on a Friday. But a Lotto Powerball jackpot win this weekend – in the year 2013, no less – could see it feature in a line-up of numbers that could change someone’s life, making them into an instant multi-millionaire.

Which numbers will you choose...?
