MEDIA RELEASE SUNDAY 15th September 2013
Rescuers from the Department of Conservation Aoraki Mt Cook Search and Rescue Team have just recovered the body of a climber who fell over bluffs below the Sefton Bivvy of Mt Sefton last night.
Rescue personal were alerted to the accident late yesterday afternoon by members of the party. Efforts to recover the body last night were hampered by failing light.
After a cold night on the mountain the three remaining team members were rescued this morning and after being checked out by medical staff were released. Although extremely cold none had any injuries.
Early this afternoon the rescue team managed to recover the body and have now returned to the Aoraki Mt Cook Search and Rescue Base. The body was located approximately 600 meters below his last known position before the accident.
The deceased man, aged in his early thirties, is an Englishman who has been living and working in Christchurch.
His name will not be released until his family is notified. Contact has been made with the British Consulate to assist with this task.
