Letting Space News: TEZA details emerge

LETTING SPACE

Dear Letting Space friends,

Lots to share as the Brokerage reopens in Wellington, we establish a media channel online, plan for our TEZA project in Christchurch (see artist lineup and dates) and start a series of three works in Auckland.

Cheers, Mark, Sophie and Helen

HOW DO YOU AFFORD TO DO THIS?

In August we embarked on our first media project, embedded in the Auckland Art Fair to create Studio Channel Art Fair a public space for interviews with a brilliant array of artists, dealers, collectors, curators and others, focusing on the business of art and the relationships. There are 21 ten-minute interviews are available for viewing at www.lettingspace.org.nz/studio_channel_art_fair. It was quite the media experience and a treat to be able to share a bit of a treasure trove with you wherever you are.

TEZA: TRANSITIONAL ECONOMIC ZONE OF AOTEAROA

Our dates and venue are set, and we welcome our core group of artists. We’d love to have you there alongside a range of special projects coming together from throughout New Zealand in New Brighton, Christchurch from 25 November 2013.

The focus is on highlighting a range of practices that propose new ways to value our time, resources and relationships - exploring ways of working together for common good. Christchurch has been a hotbed of projects of community resourcefulness in recent times, and TEZA will pay homage to this energy.

Three of the TEZA community are artists we have worked with previously Tim Barlow, Kim Paton and Mark Harvey. They are joined by Phil Dadson, Kerry Ann Lee, Richard Bartlett, David Cook with Tim J Velling, Te Urutahi Waikerepuru, Kura Puke with Stuart Foster and Simon Kaan. More initial details on the kaupapa and the artist projects can be found at http://www.lettingspace.org.nz/transitional-economic-zone-of/. Please let us know if you, or someone you know, would like to contribute in the project or its set up.

AN ANTIDOTE TO INDIFFERENCE

Before the year is out we launch the first Letting Space commission by JWT Advertising’s Auckland office.  We will bring three projects to life for 4 months each and for the first we're rapt to be working with Judy Darragh. Judy exhibited in the 1990s series of Letting Space that we produced out of Artspace and it's been a great joy re-connecting.

We’re interested in testing out the space between private and public space given how advertising has such a pervasive presence. As with all our projects we’re looking for the projects to exert some positive change in the public commons - in this case in terms of the relationship between business and the world. This is in keeping with JWT Auckland's own manifesto, which sees them aim to create work that goes beyond advertising, makes a positive contribution to daily life, and effects positive change. Our great thanks to JWT’s Cleve Cameron who some of you will also know for his own innovative independent creative work.

Recognising the tensions inherent in a commercial commission and between art and advertising, we’re looking forward to some interesting discussion on these inter-plays. All the projects will have activity in public space as well as the JWT office space in the Imperial Building, Queen Street and Fort Lane, Auckland.

URBAN DREAMS CONTINUE IN WELLINGTON

Thanks to Wellington City Council's Public Art Fund, we will be running our brokerage (UDB) out of 19 Tory St for at least another 6 months, with Helen Kirlew-Smith assisting creators of innovative projects to find sites in vacant commercial buildings.  We're beginning to see proposals building on the success of past UDB projects, which is particularly exciting! see www.urbandreambrokerage.org.nz
