Poetry Series Takes a Bow
Poetry Series Takes a Bow
Dunedin (Thursday, 3 October 2013) – Concluding the second round of highly successful Poetry with a Pulse evenings this year, two of New Zealand’s most acclaimed poets will be performing at Port Chalmers Library on Thursday, 10 October.
Fiona Farrell and Vincent O'Sullivan will be taking the podium for this final bow, rounding off this second series of Poetry With a Pulse. This occurs hot on the heels of Lisa Samuels and David Howard, Selina Marsh and Rogelio Guedea, who contributed works for the two preceding events, Poetry with a Pulse: Prelude and Poetry with a Pulse: Interlude.
Appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for 'services to literature' in 2012, Fiona Farrell is a writer whose poetry has been praised as ‘tough, sinewy, restlessly intelligent’ and ‘bursting with ideas’. As well as being widely anthologised, Fiona has published three collections of poetry, including 'The Popup Book of Invasions' which was a finalist for the NZ Montana Book Awards for Poetry 2008. Her most recent publication, 'The Broken Book' (Auckland University Press, 2011) includes 21 poems relating to the Christchurch earthquake.
Poet Laureate Vincent O’Sullivan’s witty, profound and elegant writing has been widely published nationally and internationally. He was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2000, and has received numerous residencies, fellowships and awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement for poetry in 2005. His most recent collection of poetry, ‘Us, Then’ (Victoria University Press) was published in 2013.
The Poetry with a Pulse evenings have been co-ordinated with great success by Lynley Edmeades and Orchid Tierney, Masters Students at the Department of English, University of Otago; with the support of the Dunedin Public Libraries, and the University of Otago Division of Humanities Performing Arts Fund.
The Port Chalmers Library has been chosen as the venue for this final performance for its historic and atmospheric surroundings. Audience members are encouraged to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
