Police dog Gus has successfully undergone surgery after he was stabbed in an incident near Whangarei in the early hours of this morning.
Gus is doing well and will be monitored over the next 24 hours to see how he responds to treatment.
The picture of Gus taken by police this afternoon shows him after surgery when he was let out for a short walk at the vet clinic in Carrington, Auckland.
Gus is connected to an apparatus that releases air from his punctured lung and the bandage around his middle is covering the stab wound. The bandage on his leg is to hold a drip in place.
Gus's handler is remaining at his side at the vet clinic while Gus continues his treatment.
Police would like to thank all the staff at the vet clinic for their care and treatment of Gus, who is coping very well.
Northland District police would also like to thank the public for the many heartening messages of support which have been received about Gus since this morning.
