There is still time to vote Auckland!

Media release

9 October 2013

There is still time to vote Auckland!

Today is the last day to post your vote for the 2013 local elections, but Aucklanders have until midday Saturday 12 October to drop their voting documents in ballot boxes in all public libraries, the Electoral Office at 45 Queen Street or one of the eight designated Auckland Council service centres.

Only around 23 per cent of Auckland voters have voted in the local body elections so far. Electoral Officer Bruce Thomas is hopeful that this number will increase significantly in the coming days.

“I am counting on Aucklanders having got together with their families, friends and flatmates last weekend to fill in their voting document and for the votes to start rolling in later this week.”

“If you are still wondering who to vote for, remember to visit www.voteauckland.co.nz for candidate profiles and information on how Auckland Council works.”

Ballot boxes are at the following locations and times until midday Saturday:

At the electoral office (level 10, 45 Queen Street, Auckland) during normal office hours and on Saturday 12 October from 9am to midday.

At designated Auckland Council service centres and all libraries from today (Wednesday 9 October) to midday Saturday 12 October 2013 (except Manukau and Takapuna service centres).

Designated service centres:

• Great Barrier Island Service Centre, Hector Sanderson Road, Claris

• Henderson Service Centre, 6 Henderson Valley Road, Henderson

• Manukau Service Centre, Ground Floor, Kotuku House, 4 Osterley Way, Manukau (on Saturday please go to the library across the road from the Manukau Service Centre)

• Orewa Service Centre, 50 Centreway Road, Orewa

• Papakura Service Centre, 35 Coles Crescent, Papakura

• Pukekohe Service Centre, 82 Manukau Road, Pukekohe

• Takapuna Service Centre, 1 The Strand, Takapuna (on Saturday please go to the library next to the Takapuna Service Centre)

• Waiheke Service Centre, 10 Belgium Street, Ostend.

Auckland Council library locations and opening times can be found at www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz.

If you haven’t received your voting documents, you need to visit the designated Auckland Council service centre or designated library (Birkenhead, Glen Eden, Howick, Kumeu) nearest to where you live to collect special voting documents. You can also collect from the Electoral Office.

Daily voting return figures are available at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/elections.

Gordon Campbell:
On What John Banks And Nick Smith Have In Common

The defence that John Banks has been offering to the charges of electoral fraud – that he didn’t read the document he signed, and therefore lacked the necessary criminal intent – is a fairly standard example of political business as usual.

At a time when political power is being centralised downtown in the Executive, responsibility is being re-located to the suburbs. The Beehive seeks to operate as a blame free, shame free environment. At all times, plausible deniability is to be maintained.

Being able to put distance between the Minister and the actions/outcomes/political fallout of policy is not simply the last desperate resort of scoundrels, but the first resort of the foot soldiers in ministerial service... More>>
