Sarah Walker to present bikes to deserving Kiwi kids

Know of a deserving child from the Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne or Wellington? Nominate them to receive a bike!

BMX Olympian Sarah Walker has confirmed she will lend a hand with presenting bikes to deserving Kiwi kids, as part of Variety – The Children’s Charity’s Bikes for Kids tour.

Sarah’s involvement comes after a recent trip to Vietnam with Variety, in which she raised over $2600 – that’s enough to give 13 deserving Kiwi kids their very own bike and helmet!

Variety is currently calling for nominations for kids to receive a brand new bike as part of the tour. Sarah is encouraging locals on the Bikes for Kids route to identify children who would benefit from this recognition.

“If you can think of a child who is a top role model to their peers and is otherwise not in a position to receive a bike, I encourage you to nominate them! Bikes for Kids is all about recognising awesome children and rewarding them with an experience others may take for granted… the thrill of riding a bike.”

The 2013 Bikes for Kids tour will take place from November 4 – 9. Commencing in Cambridge, the bike-laden truck will travel to Rotorua, Kawerau, Whakatane, Opotiki, Gisborne, Wairoa, Napier, Hastings and Wellington.

Sarah Walker will help with bike presentations in Cambridge, Rotorua and Kawerau.

To receive a bike a child needs to be:

Aged between 7 and 9 years (between 111 cm and 135 cm tall)
Socio-economically disadvantaged, with their family not in a position to purchase a bike OR
Have recently overcome some adverse circumstances OR
A child who is a role model to others, consistently making a difference within their school and community environments and showing an outstanding ability to assist those around them

The annual Bikes for Kids Tour is part of the Variety Kids on the Move programme, providing life-enriching assistance to Kiwi kids. Variety believes the recognition of being gifted a bike provides an incentive for peers to become good school and community citizens.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from www.variety.org.nz or call 09 520 4111 for more information. Or for a donation of $200 you can buy a kiwi kid their very own bike and helmet.

Variety would like to thank AvantiPlus, Ford, TR Group, Zurich and Kiwi Ball in Dubai for their generous support of Bikes for Kids.

Nomination deadline is October 18.

Gordon Campbell:
On What John Banks And Nick Smith Have In Common

The defence that John Banks has been offering to the charges of electoral fraud – that he didn’t read the document he signed, and therefore lacked the necessary criminal intent – is a fairly standard example of political business as usual.

At a time when political power is being centralised downtown in the Executive, responsibility is being re-located to the suburbs. The Beehive seeks to operate as a blame free, shame free environment. At all times, plausible deniability is to be maintained.

Being able to put distance between the Minister and the actions/outcomes/political fallout of policy is not simply the last desperate resort of scoundrels, but the first resort of the foot soldiers in ministerial service... More>>
