New Pathway Unveiled at Pakowhai Country Park

New Pathway Unveiled at Pakowhai Country Park

A new pathway was unveiled at Pakowhai Country Park yesterday by former Hawke’s Bay regional councillor, Eileen von Dadelszen, who was surprised to find it was named for her.

Mrs von Dadelszen thought she was simply taking a walk with her husband, only to be greeted in the park by the Regional Council Chairman, Councillors and staff.

She unveiled a bollard bearing the name of her walk and with her husband, planted three kowhai, and then took a walk around the new von Dadelszen pathway.

The pathway links the main pathway with a new bridge at the south-western end and takes a loop near the boundary past the wetland.

The pathway marks the contribution of Mrs Dadelszen as a past Chairman of the Regional Council, and a councillor for the Hastings Constituency from 1995 and until she resigned in May this year to take up a role as a Commissioner for the Environment Court.

Eileen and her husband Mark have had a long association with Pakowhai Country Park. They were ‘Friends of Pakowhai’, a volunteer organisation set up in 1976 by Dr Michael Bostock, and helped with the planning and maintenance of the park. Over subsequent years, the couple has remained interested and involved in developments at the park.

As a Councillor Eileen was particularly involved in improving carpark facilities at the park in recent years with Hastings District Council, and she encouraged the research and publication last year of a history book about the park.

Eileen also unveiled a matching bollard marking the Doug Walker track yesterday. This commemorates the work of the past Chairman of the Regional Council who was involved in the Ngaruroro flood protection works in the 1970s which led to the creation of the park around the Raupare Stream.

Pakowhai Country Park near Hastings is popular as leisure park, particularly with families and dog owners who can let their dogs off the leash.

Gordon Campbell:
On What John Banks And Nick Smith Have In Common

The defence that John Banks has been offering to the charges of electoral fraud – that he didn’t read the document he signed, and therefore lacked the necessary criminal intent – is a fairly standard example of political business as usual.

At a time when political power is being centralised downtown in the Executive, responsibility is being re-located to the suburbs. The Beehive seeks to operate as a blame free, shame free environment. At all times, plausible deniability is to be maintained.

Being able to put distance between the Minister and the actions/outcomes/political fallout of policy is not simply the last desperate resort of scoundrels, but the first resort of the foot soldiers in ministerial service... More>>
