Christchurch Diwali celebrates new beginnings

India comes to Christchurch on 26 October with a celebration of Diwali that is bursting with traditional culture, 100 years of Indian cinema and a pyrotechnic fireworks display surprise inspired by one of the subcontinent's most famous icons.

Singapore Airlines Diwali - Indian festival of Lights 2013 at the CBS Arena offers a chance to explore the music, dance, yoga, fashion, art and food of India through a family-friendly programme from 3 - 9pm.

During Diwali, which is known as the 'festival of lights', light symbolises the triumph of good over evil. It's the biggest event for Indians around the world, comparable to Christmas in Western culture, Christchurch Indian Social and Cultural Club president Dr.

Sandeep Sachdev says.

"Diwali is our gift to all people in Christchurch. It's a way for the local Indian community to celebrate and share our culture in all it's diversity and rich heritage. We have worked particularly hard this year to present an especially inspiring Diwali celebration with broad appeal."

Awareness of the inner light and dispelling ignorance is the deeper meaning of Diwali.

For the Christchurch event, traditional aspects of the festival have been balanced with broad appeal entertainment such as a mini-cinema celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema and a contemporary Indian lounge by where people can dress up in saris and turbans to have their photos taken.

The performance programme is particularly strong with the colourful costumes of traditional dance from different regions such as Bharat Natyam (Tamil Nadu), Bhangra (Punjab) and Garba (Gujurat).

There is also an emphasis on art workshops this year including a Rangoli, or communally created coloured sand artwork, and Diya, or clay lamp painting.

For a real taste of India, vendors will be offering cuisine not usually available in Christchurch.

Singapore Airlines Diwali - Festival of Lights 2013 has been made possible through the sponsorship of Singapore Airlines and support from ANZ and Christchurch City Council.

Entry is just $5 for adults, $2 for children under 12 and free for children under 6.

Gordon Campbell:
On What John Banks And Nick Smith Have In Common

The defence that John Banks has been offering to the charges of electoral fraud – that he didn’t read the document he signed, and therefore lacked the necessary criminal intent – is a fairly standard example of political business as usual.

At a time when political power is being centralised downtown in the Executive, responsibility is being re-located to the suburbs. The Beehive seeks to operate as a blame free, shame free environment. At all times, plausible deniability is to be maintained.

Being able to put distance between the Minister and the actions/outcomes/political fallout of policy is not simply the last desperate resort of scoundrels, but the first resort of the foot soldiers in ministerial service... More>>
