This Sunday, 20 October, the usually quiet apartment-lined Tennyson Street in Wellington’s CBD will come alive with music, food, markets, art, children’s activities and more for the second annual Tennyson Street Fair!

After a successful inaugural event in 2012, organisers Elim International Church, who are located in the middle of the venue, have expanded on the initial concept and along with closing the road for extra space have added a Big Rig Stage packed with artists and secured over 70 stalls from around the region.

Special features of the 2013 event include an Artist Gallery with a carefully selected suite of artists, each with work on display and for sale, free workshops throughout the day with topics ranging from basic First Aid to photography and sustainable living, and a Top Team event open to all.

But in behind the fun and games is a larger cause. The event was established as a catalyst to bring inner city dwellers together and help create community in an apartment dominated area.

Event Co-ordinatior Tom Buchanan says “we understand the importance of community, in every day life, and especially in times of emergency and disaster. The Fair is a way to bring people out and encourage them to connect with their neighbours and others around them so they have support in times of need.”

Residents of inner city apartments who attend the Fair will have the opportunity to sign up to community support groups coordinated by a local Lions Club, and on-going events are planned to continue relationships that might be initiated at the Fair.

A large crowd from all over the Wellington Region is expected to come and join in on the festivities, which kick off at 10.30am and run through until 4.30pm.

Tennyson St runs between Cambridge Tce and Tory St. The fair starts at 10:30am and runs until 4.30pm.  The postponement date is Sunday October 27th.

Gordon Campbell:
On What John Banks And Nick Smith Have In Common

The defence that John Banks has been offering to the charges of electoral fraud – that he didn’t read the document he signed, and therefore lacked the necessary criminal intent – is a fairly standard example of political business as usual.

At a time when political power is being centralised downtown in the Executive, responsibility is being re-located to the suburbs. The Beehive seeks to operate as a blame free, shame free environment. At all times, plausible deniability is to be maintained.

Being able to put distance between the Minister and the actions/outcomes/political fallout of policy is not simply the last desperate resort of scoundrels, but the first resort of the foot soldiers in ministerial service... More>>
