New Health Contacts booklet spreads throughout our community

A new health resource has been released to the community this week. The Health Contacts booklet covers a wide range of local health and social support organisations as well as regional and national services. Community Development Advisor Sofia Robinson met last week with Mangaroa School’s Principle Glenys Rogers to hand her a copy for every child in the school. It is available to the public throughout schools, health organisations, and in public service spaces such as Council reception and the Library.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 25 OCT 2013—A new health resource was launched last week by Upper Hutt City Council’s Community Services team. The Health Contacts booklet is a new community resource to assist people to locate local health and social support organisations. The booklet was created so that everyone can access information to support their wellbeing.

Health Contacts contains contact information for a wide variety of health services in our area from pharmacies and mental health services, to hospitals, counseling services and much more. This is the go-to-guide for Upper Hutt and will be useful for long term residents, as well as newcomers, to discover what services are available to them. It also has information about some regional and national services that may not be covered in Upper Hutt. The booklet was collated through the collaborative effort of many services in the area and aims to support the community’s vision of connecting people to create a healthy and safe community.

There has already been a positive response to the resource, especially from schools. Community Development Advisor Sofía Robinson met with Mangaroa School’s Principal Glenys Rogers to hand the school 100 copies, one for each family to have at home. “We believe this booklet supports our vision of creating safe and resilient communities, and is great for the new families who need local knowledge and to support existing families,” said Principal Glenys Rogers.

There has been high demand for more copies from across many other sectors as well, such as retirement villages and organisations that meet the disabled community’s needs. Free copies have been distributed across local health organisations for the public to take and can be found in medical centres, pharmacies, the Work and Income office as well as the City Library and Council reception. Advisor Sofía Robinson says “This is a key document for all Upper Hutt residents to have, as it contains more than just your everyday health contacts, it also has a wide range of lesser known, but very important, local and national social support information that our community needs to know they have the right to access”.
