Award for Civic Administration Building

Award for Civic Administration Building

November 8, 2013

The re-vamped Civic Administration Building on Rimu Road won a top Wellington architecture award last night.

Mayor Ross Church, who attended the presentation at Shed 6, said he was absolutely delighted. “The old building was certainly well past its used-by date. It was a rabbit warren, leaked, had rot in the outside walls and was ill-suited to modern Council needs.

“The new building is a delight to work in. It’s functional, public access is excellent, the debating chamber is now on the ground floor, and there is good lighting and air flow throughout.

“The building design is not over the top. It’s simple and elegant, and a very good corner stone for the civic centre of the future.”

The building is one of five award winners in the Commercial Architecture category of the Wellington Architecture Awards 2013. There were nine categories. All awardees will be entered into the New Zealand Architecture Awards to be announced in May next year

The building was designed by Designgroup Stapleton Elliott, project managed by The Building Intelligence Group (TBIG) and construction undertaken by Armstrong Downes. Site work began early 2012 and the building re-occupied by Council in March this year.

Mayor Church said he was happy to say the project came in on time and within budget.
