Singapore Airlines adds extra summer services to Christchurch

Christchurch Airport and Singapore Airlines have today agreed to add 18 additional flights to Christchurch over the December 2014 – February 2015 summer season.

This follows an extra 10 Singapore Airlines flights having been added to this summer’s schedule, all to cater for the strong demand for travel to the South Island over the busy summer holidays.

Christchurch Airport CEO Jim Boult says this early commitment from such a prestigious global airline is a vote of confidence in Christchurch and the South Island’s tourism offering for visitors globally.

“The new services will add more than 9,760 additional seats in the 2014/15 summer and are timed to bring additional guests here for the Cricket World Cup and Chinese New Year celebrations,” says Mr Boult.

“Additional air services also create opportunities for South Island business, on the back of the city’s rebuild and upcoming new facilities, so this announcement is undoubtedly a win for everyone.”

Edwin Chiang, Singapore Airline’s General Manager New Zealand, says the extra services underline the 27-year relationship between Singapore Airlines and Christchurch Airport.

“We’ve been committed to this market and the New Zealand tourism industry for a long time and it’s great to see the resurgence in visitors post-earthquakes,” says Mr Chiang. “The demand for summer seats to Christchurch and the South Island is high, thanks to renewed growth in the tourism industry. We’re an active partner in Christchurch's tourism industry and know the demand for seats here is supporting the recovery of an iconic tourism destination.”

Singapore Airlines already serves Christchurch with daily services, which provide tourists direct access to the gateway to the South Island.  The increased services over the next two summer seasons will give travellers to the South Island increased flight options, as well as providing more cargo capacity and frequency for exporters.  The increase is testament to the popularity of the route and the company’s commitment to providing greater flexibility, convenience and choice when traveling between Christchurch and Singapore and beyond on Singapore Airlines global network of 99 destinations in 36 countries.

Further details of the exact days of operations and timings during the 2014/15 season will be revealed in the next few months.
