Winner of Youth Spirit Award Announced

Korrie Middendorf from Wakatipu High School has been named as the winner of the Trustpower Queenstown Lakes District Youth Community Spirit Award.

The Award will be presented at the Trustpower Queenstown Lakes District Community Awards held tonight on Monday 11 November 2013.

Run in conjunction with the Trustpower Queenstown Lakes Community Awards, the Trustpower Youth Community Award recognises secondary school students’ service to the school and the community.  The Award is jointly run by Trustpower and the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Local high schools were asked to recommend one student to be considered for the Award. The runner-up for this Award is Hannah Gerrard from Mt Aspiring College.

To be considered for the Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award students had to have given service to school or community projects, treated others with care and respect and been a good ambassador for the school and the Queenstown Lakes region.

Trustpower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville says Korrie is a talented, generous and caring young lady.

“Passionate about strengthening overall ties between her school and the community; Korrie is involved both as a leader and behind the scenes volunteer in a number of groups and projects at her school and in the community.

“At Wakatipu High School this includes her role as Co-chair of the Community and Service arm of the Student Council, committee member for Students Against Drink Driving and she was a student leader for the recent stage challenge.

“Korrie has also played an important role in a number of fundraising activities including as leader of the Volunteer Services Abroad fundraiser which has helped raise funds for various local, community and international organisations some of which include Orphans Aid, Plunket, CanTeen and Camp Quality. On top of this she also helped raise funds to install a defribulator at Wakatipu High School and she was the Team Leader for the school 40 hour famine team which spent 40 hours locked in a cage in central Queenstown.

“Out in the community Korrie has also been a St John Youth leader, national New Zealand Model United Nations delegate, netball coach and referee.

“As you can tell this busy young lady with a big heart lends her time to a variety of projects and causes. Not only do her fundraising efforts impact her local community but a much broader national and international community,” says Miss Somerville.

For winning the Award Korrie will receive a trophy, framed certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 being given to a community group or organisation of her choice.

The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award will be presented at the Trustpower Queenstown Lakes Community Awards, being held tonight on Monday 11 November 2013.
