Schools Help Raise More Than $750,000 for Philippines

Schools Help Campbell Live and UNICEF Raise More Than $750,000 for Philippines Emergency

Hundreds of schools all over New Zealand held mufti days today to raise money for the Philippines Emergency.

Their generous efforts are part of a Campbell Live initiative that has now raised more than $750,000 for Unicef’s work in the stricken country.

Kiwis have donated by texting HOPE to 3181 to make an automatic $3 donation, with Gareth Morgan matching the first $200,000 donated via text, individuals and businesses have contacted Campbell Live to make lump sum donations, and today’s school fundraisers have pushed the total even higher.

Campbell Live Executive Producer Pip Keane says donations continue to flow in from around the country.

“It will be at least a week before we have a final tally but Campbell Live has already raised more than $750,000 for Unicef, including Gareth Morgan's very generous contribution,” she says.

Host John Campbell says:  “We're utterly staggered by the generosity we've seen. 150,000 texts. It's amazing. We'd hoped we might get 10,000!  And then the schools.  Hundreds of them.  Full of their beautiful kindness, from one end of the country to the other.

“After our fundraising for Lunchbox Day, and the Pike River families, and Otago rugby, and a paralysed Samoan rugby player, and other really worthy causes, we knew our viewers were kind. But the Philippines are a place many New Zealanders haven't even visited. And sometimes there's a real sense of hopelessness after such a large event.

“So, to raise three quarters of a million dollars, most of it in gold coins and three dollar text donations, really is a wonderful thing. We'd like to thank the hundreds of thousands of people (literally) who've been involved!”

Campbell Live devoted today’s show to a special report on the generosity of young Kiwis, visiting schools around the country as they raised money for Unicef (3news.co.nz/campbelllive).

The programme will revisit the Philippines in 2014 with Unicef to find out how the donations have been spent.

On top of the Campbell Live fundraising, Paula Penfold’s 3rd Degree report from the Philippines has inspired New Zealanders to donate more than $300,000 to World Vision’s typhoon relief fund (3news.co.nz/3rddegree).

Campbell Live thanks the following schools and everyone else who participated today:
